Key points

  • Samsung Electronics reported operating profit of 107.44 trillion won for the third quarter of 2026, up 783.1% from a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing — the first quarter above 100 trillion won by a South Korean company.
  • Revenue rose 126.9% to 195.25 trillion won, while net profit rose 514.6% to 75.13 trillion won, according to Yonhap — below the 87.01 trillion won average analysts had expected.
  • The semiconductor division accounted for about 106 trillion won of operating profit, Newspim reported, with memory sales of 140.7 trillion won, up 427% from a year earlier.
  • Samsung's board approved a 30 trillion won dividend, worth 4,601 won per share and payable on 27 November, Reuters and the Korea Herald reported — and the company warned the chip supply shortage will deepen next year.

Samsung Electronics has posted the largest quarterly profit in its history, powered by a surge in demand for the memory chips that underpin artificial intelligence. The third-quarter result, confirmed in a regulatory filing on Thursday 29 October, passed the 100 trillion won mark that the company had projected in preliminary guidance on 8 October, the Korea Herald reported — a milestone no company had reached before in a single quarter. What drove the record

The story of the quarter is scarcity. Heavy investment in AI infrastructure has driven up demand — and prices — for advanced memory, and Samsung, the world's largest memory chipmaker, has been selling into a market where supply cannot keep up. Reuters reported that the company expects the chip supply shortage to deepen next year, echoing the outlook from its cross-town rival SK Hynix, which reported strong earnings on Wednesday and forecast sustained demand. The two results together eased market worries that the AI spending boom might be losing momentum, Reuters said, lifting shares in both companies.

The scale of the beat is striking in context. The Korea JoongAng Daily reported that Samsung's quarterly operating profit now exceeds those of Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta — the very American technology giants whose data-centre spending is fuelling the chipmaker's windfall. Operating profit also came in slightly above the 106 trillion won consensus compiled by market tracker FnGuide, the paper reported, even though revenue of 195.3 trillion won fell below the 200.3 trillion won analysts had forecast. In won terms the result is unambiguous: the company earned more than twice its entire 2025 operating profit, of 43.6 trillion won, in a single three-month period, according to MK.

The one soft spot

Not every line of the results beat expectations. Net profit of 75.13 trillion won, while up more than fivefold from a year earlier, fell short of the 87.01 trillion won average estimate in a Yonhap Infomax survey of analysts, Yonhap reported. And the division that makes finished products — the Device Experience division, which handles phones and other devices — posted a loss for a second consecutive quarter, Newspim reported, even as the semiconductor division's operating margin reached 72%. The split matters for how the record is read: this was a chip quarter, not a broad Samsung quarter, and the finished-goods business is still waiting for its share of the boom.

What happens next

For shareholders, the immediate reward is cash: the board's 30 trillion won dividend is part of a 90 trillion to 110 trillion won shareholder return plan announced in August, the Korea Herald reported, and it will be paid on 27 November. For the wider market, the open question is durability — whether AI infrastructure spending stays high enough to keep memory prices elevated, or whether today's shortage becomes tomorrow's glut. Samsung's own warning points one way: a shortage that deepens next year would keep pricing power with the chipmakers. Europe Unfolded will report Samsung's next quarterly results when they are announced.
